What To Do When Your Design Business Slows

As a design business, you are likely to experience slow times when there is a lack of clients and projects. When these times come, it’s important to stay productive and not get too discouraged. If your design business is slowing down, here are some tips on what to do when your design business slows so you can make the most of your time.

Invest in Training & Education

When you have downtime, use it as an opportunity to learn more about topics within your industry or related ones. This will allow you to develop new skills that can help you be successful in the future. You could attend webinars, online courses, or conferences that focus on design and related topics. Consider also reading books related to your field and subscribing to magazines or newsletters that share helpful information. Additionally, joining professional organizations can open up networking opportunities as well as additional resources for learning more about your field.

Re-Evaluate Your Processes & Services

During slower times in your business, take a look at what services you offer and how they’re being delivered. Are there areas where you can improve? Is there something new that should be added? Do some research on what other businesses are doing in order to get inspiration for improving upon what you already offer or adding something new which could help draw in more customers. Also, consider the way you handle contracts and invoice clients – this is a great time to re-evaluate these processes so that they are efficient and effective when the workload picks back up again!

Catch Up On Administrative Tasks

When times are slow with no major projects coming through the door, use this opportunity to catch up on administrative tasks such as updating client databases, revamping online portfolios or websites, creating new marketing materials such as brochures/flyers/postcards/etc., creating a newsletter for existing clients detailing recent accomplishments or upcoming events, etc.. These activities may not seem exciting but doing them can help ensure the smooth running of your business when things pick back up again! Maintaining good relationships with current customers will also help bring in more referrals from them in the future too!

Create New Passion Projects

This is the perfect time to showcase your design skills. Follow brief clubs on social media to participate in design briefs! Share them on your social media and website to gain exposure. You can also create your own passion projects geared toward your dream client. Include popular hashtags and use professional mockups to get the most out of them.
